ECC Memory and desktop motherboard?
Noticed that on ebay second hand ECC memory is usually much cheaper than normal non-ECC. If I bought some and tried to install it would it work in a motherboard that does not specify support for ECC features. I understand that ECC modules have a an extra chip - would the motherboard simply ignore the chip or would it just refuse to boot? I cant seem to get a straight answer from tech-sites and forums - some say yes it will be fine, some say it wont work on most boards. Intel talks about voltage regulators being a problem but then on another page they have tested ECC memory on a non-ECC chipset. I'm aware that registered / buffered memory wont work at all - I am talking about ECC unbuffered. Anyone actually tried it? Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes

Hi, START | Control Panel | Device Manager Under Display Adapters your video card ought to be listed. If you think its reporting the wrong one, then go here:    http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html Download and install and run the utility. It will take a moment to run, then give you a comprehensive list off all your Hardware plus the model codes. Note!!! When you run this utility it places a shortcut to one of the sites other pages promoting their other software on your desktop. [the price we pay for free]. If you delete the shortcut, next time you run the utility it will put it back. It's not malware so just to let you know incase you wonder where did that "Hunter Soft Free Download" shortcut come from. Regards, Javalad

I am installing a new motherboard, CPU, GPU, and memory and i do have to reinstall windows 7?
HI I have a Inspiron 530 Desktop and i am going to change the motherboard, CPU, GPU and memory. In some forums that i have read people say that when changing the motherboard they have to reinstall windows? And in some forums they say that if the hard drive is the same than there is no need for reinstalling windows and i can just log on. Since i am not chaning the hard drive, do i have to reinstall my windows 7?

If you can get the drivers for the new hardware you should be good. So no.

How should I speed up my Dell Inspiron 8600 in the most cost effective way?
This computer frustrates me. I use it for simple programs like iTunes, Firefox, Word, and Excel and it is so slow. I'm thinking I'm either going to speed it up for little money with the tips that people share on this forum or shell out $500 and buy a new desktop. Specs: Running Windows XP v 2002 sp2 The 60gb hard drive has 12gb left of free space. Dell Inspiron 8600 Intel Pentium Processor 1500MHz 599 MHz, 256 MB of Ram I defragment the hard drive about twice a year. Norton Anti-Virus is always on and updated. The computer is four to five years old. Using msconfig, I've turned off most of over a hundred startup processes to speed up startup (which is still very slow). I've wondered wether or not one or more of these that I've turned off actually in some way would contribute to a faster system. I was careful to do my research and ensure that they weren't necessary. Also, being somewhat tech savvy, can I easily replace the memory and possibly a fan (it's overheated before)? Would I be able to add memory myself? And I have no issues with a little bit of learning and a little bit of work, but it seems that laptops are a different beast.

Preform disk defrags, disk cleanups weekly, get rid of norton, it is a processor hungry monster replace with AVG free, upgrade RAM to the maxium supported (crucial.com). Alternatively you could use it for linux which is a less demanding OS that would run faster with your existing specs. EDIT; You propably could upgrade the RAm yourself if your anyway tach savvy, google " RAM upgrade", chances are someone else will have tried it before. Good luck!
