What is wrong with my desktop memory?
I recently built a new computer. I got the right memory for the motherboard. I installed the memory into the slots. The first time, my computer booted up fine. The next day I tried to turn on my computer again and I got one long beep and nothing else happened. I did some research and I know that it is the memory. So i took the memory out and then placed it into the other slot. I turned it on and it worked great. The next day it started beeping again so I changed the memory slots again and it worked great. Each day I have to change the slot for my computer to turn on. I replaced the memory and it still did everything. So I replaced the motherboard and it still does it. Do I need to install the memory for my computer to read it? Does anyone have a clue what is going wrong with my computer? I only have two slots on my motherboard.

Some motherboard require that you have two sticks of RAM installed, and if there are 4 slots, the 2 sticks need to be in specific slots. Also, you said you replaced the motherboard, so this probably isn't it, but a dead CMOS battery (the watch battery) on the motherboard can cause weird memory / processor problems that seem to not have any other explanations... And, last but not least be sure the motherboard is reading the speed of the memory correctly. The memory's speed needs to be the same as the processors FSB speed (front side bus). Sometimes the motherboard incorrectly identifies the processor's speed or the memory's speed and latency. In rare instances, some motherboards just don't like memory from some companies. There is some weird, undocumented incompatibility, so if you have another brand of memory, you might try to use it for a few days.

Desktop computer memory upgrade (2)?
I currently have the following memory installed: OCZ Platinum XTC Rev. 2 PC2-6400 2 GB 2x1GB DDR2-800 CL-4-4-4-15 240 PIN DIMM Dual Channel Mem on the following motherboard: GIGABYTE S-series Ultra Durable 2 Motherboards GA-P35-DS3R Supports Intel Core 2 Mutli-Core Processors 45 nm Processors Optimized FSB1333 Support I am thinking of upgrading my memory and purchase the following rams: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4631346&CatId=2264 I'm tempted to go with the 2 x 2 GB addition to have a total of 6 GB. I currently have 2 slots of memory occupied, so the next two will occupy the remaining two. My questions: 1) Will they be compatible? 2) Are there anything I should do to make them compatible or is it just plug and play? 3) I was told that it's not good to mix rams. I am quiet sure that the rams i've chosen in the link above have the same speed (800 MHz) and type (DDR2). But i'm not sure about the memory timing. How can I know? 4) Assume the corsair sticks (4GB) i've chosen above have a higher memory timing (i.e. worse) than the one i have at the moment (CL-4-4-4-15). Would an increase in memory size compensate for the loss in the memory timing efficiency? Thanks for your time! :)

1) Will they be compatible? All RAM is compatible(if not, then something is broken) 2) Are there anything I should do to make them compatible or is it just plug and play? No, they are Plug and Play 3) I was told that it's not good to mix rams. I am quiet sure that the rams i've chosen in the link above have the same speed (800 MHz) and type (DDR2). But i'm not sure about the memory timing. How can I know? from what i know, you can Mix them (im using a 512MB DDR2667 Toshiba and a 2GB DDR2800 Samsung) the memory speed will drop down to the slower RAM card(it does not alter the actual RAM card just the speed it is used at) 4) Assume the corsair sticks (4GB) i've chosen above have a higher memory timing (i.e. worse) than the one i have at the moment (CL-4-4-4-15). Would an increase in memory size compensate for the loss in the memory timing efficiency? depends on what your doing, but in most cases, Yes also you did not mention weather you are using a x65(64Bit) / x86(32Bit) Version of Windows, because 32Bit versions of windows can only address up to 3.22GB's of Ram wheres 64Bit systems have a Cap instituted by the OS, take Windows 7 for example, they Capped it a 1TB maximum RAM(ironic isn't it that no publicly available MotherBoard can handle such a Huge amount of ram)

Desktop computer memory upgrade (3)?
I'm about to buy the following rams: Corsair XMS2 4GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory Upgrade - 2x2048MB from this online store (Tigerdirect.ca) http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4631346&CatId=2264 Before I go ahead, I wanted to see if anyone can suggest a better ram. I picked those because i currently have the following ram (800 MHz) and same type (DDR2): OCZ Platinum XTC Rev. 2 PC2-6400 2 GB 2x1GB DDR2-800 CL-4-4-4-15 240 PIN DIMM Dual Channel Mem The only problem I can find from buying the corsair rams is the mismatch in latencies. My old rams have a better memory timing (CL-4-4-4-15) vs the corsair's ram (5-5-5-18) Corsair information source: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4631346&CatId=2264 http://www.corsair.com/memory/xms-classic/xms2-ddr2-memory/twin2x2048-6400.html The reason why I picked the corsair's is because they give the best value for their money 52$ for 4 GB is the best deal i could find so far. let me know if you can help me find a better deal in the price consideration, yet with a better memory timing. Thank you for your time :)

You can check around, there are lots of other sites to buy from. Try these: Newegg.com Amazon.com Geeks.com

Do you get an ego boost every time you add another Gig of memory to your desktop?
I know it's only 3 gigs, but I'm noticing almost as much of a difference going from two to three gigs as I did when I went from 1 to 2 gigs.
